2022-2023 Conducting Workshops and Competition

Conducting Workshops:

PYSO Music Director Jacob Joyce will be hosting Conducting Workshops for all interested PYSO members. In the Workshops, Maestro Joyce will introduce students to the fundamentals of conducting.  He will focus on baton technique, score reading, interpretation, etiquette, and other important aspects of working with an orchestra.    Workshops will be one-hour long and will precede PYSO rehearsals on selected dates (see dates below).     PYSO will provide some conductor batons at the workshops for students to use, but students are also welcome to use their own.

The Repertoire chosen for the Workshops and Competition is George Bizet’s Prelude/Aragonaise and Danse Bohème from Carmen Suites No. 1 and 2. Click the link to download the full score.

Students may participate in the Conducting Workshops but are not obligated to participate in the Conducting Competition.  However, students interested in participating in the Conducting Competition must be able to attend all three Workshop dates.

If you would like to participate in the Conducting Workshops please email Ms. Goodman at eve@pyso.org by Friday September 23, 2022.

Conducting Competition:

For those students interested, Maestro Joyce will host a Conducting Competition on Sunday, November 6, 2023 in RR1 at Heinz Hall.  Students interested in being considered for the Conducting Competition MUST participate in all three scheduled workshop dates listed above.

The Repertoire chosen for the Competition is George Bizet’s Prelude/Aragonaise and Danse Bohème from Carmen Suites No. 1 and 2. Students will be asked to conduct this piece in front of a pianist on November 6th.  Maestro Joyce will then select a winner based on the student’s written application, progress in workshops, and work in front of the pianist. The winner will conduct the piece with PYSO at the concert on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Heinz Hall.

NOTE:  There will be a separate application for the Competition.  A link with the brief application will be emailed to all Workshop participants the week of October 16.
