Maestro Leonard Slatkin took time out of his busy schedule this weekend as guest conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to conduct part of PYSO’s rehearsal on Saturday, April 13, working on excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.  PYSO’s Conducting Competition took place the same day, with congratulations going to the winner, bassoonist Mitchell Dubin!  Prior to the competition, a group of PYSO members attended several weeks of conducting workshops with PYSO Music Director Earl Lee, after which semi-finalists were chosen by Lee to conduct for Maestro Slatkin who chose the winner. Mitchell (seen here with Maestro Slatkin) will conduct Bizet’s March of the Toreadors on PYSO’s May 5, 2019 Heinz Hall concert.
