Greetings from Robert Harris who is Principal Viola of Canberra Symphony in Australia! Rob recently got in touch with PYSO, remembering Bernard Goldberg as a major positive influence on his musical life when he studied in Pittsburgh from 1969 to 1972. Rob was PYSO’s concertmaster from late ’69 through the European tour in mid ’72.
Rob adds that his closest contact to Pittsburgh in recent times was playing second viola to Randolph Kelly (PSO Principal Violist) in the great C Major K.515 Quintet by Mozart, in early October 2016. The cellist had never been to ‘the States’ but all others in the group besides Rob had Pittsburgh or US connections: Randolph, one of Rob’s teachers at Duquesne – the Australian Charmian Gadd leading the quintet; her husband Tony Gault – also her former student from her post-Duquesne professorship in Bellingham (Wash). This was part of a viola weekend festival organized by Peter Garrity, who studied with Randolph in Pittsburgh.
