Our PYSO String players have been busy.
In addition to preparing for our first concert of the season, which is this coming Sunday, November 19 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland they’ve been performing with their quartets and their school orchestras as well as participating in international string competitions.
On November 4th Sein Lee (PYSO’s Violin II Asst Principal) performed with her quartet, the Cygnus Quartet, at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium for Pittsburgh’s first Korean Music Festival. The Cygnus Quartet includes fellow PYSO musicians Chaehyun Kim (PYSO’s Violin II Co-Principal) and Thomas Chang (PYSO Co-Principal Viola) and TRYPO member Mirra Rasmussen (cello).
Violinist Devin Lai, who is in his 4th season with PYSO and is Assistant Concertmaster, was the Senior String winner in the West Virginia Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Competition held on October 28th at West Virginia University. Devin will represent West Virginia in the Eastern Division MTNA Competition in January 2018.
Jaemin Lee, who is also in his 4th season with PYSO and is Co-Principal cello, did not rest this summer. After the PYSO’s concert tour to Spain, he packed his bags and cello and headed to the Curtis Summerfest Young Artists Program at the Curtis Institute of Music.
PYSO’s other Assistant Concertmaster William Wang was recently awarded First Prize in two categories of the Great Composers International Competition Series. He won the Master of Violin Sonata category (performing the 1st movement of Beethoven’s Spring Sonata) and The Art of Strings category (performing the 1st movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major).
