On January 22, 2020, PYSO member Nick Murawski participated in a masterclass with Julian Bliss at the Johnstonbaughs Music Center.

Julian Bliss is a world renown clarinetist “excelling as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, jazz artist, masterclass leader and tireless musical explorer”. You can learn more about Julian Bliss here.

The Johnstonbaugh Music Center hosted a masterclass where Julian worked with local clarinet students, among them being PYSO’s own Nick Murawski. I asked Nick a few questions to hear his thoughts on this opportunity.

BM: When did you start playing the clarinet?

NM: I started playing clarinet in 5th grade after my elementary school teacher recommended the instrument to me.

BM: What was your experience like with the masterclass? Are there any moments that stand out to you, or interesting things you learned?

NM: Playing in the masterclass, alongside a few other students, was a fantastic opportunity. For the masterclass I played “Solo de Concourse” by Andre Messager, which I plan on using for upcoming college auditions. I learned some new techniques on learning difficult technical sections of music, along with different phrasings within the piece that I hadn’t thought about before.

It really stood out to me the high a level of musicianship he had. He not only was an incredible musician but was completely down to earth and just seemed to be an average person going about his life with a passion he loves.
